Stanley Matthews: The Wizard of the Dribble

1965

Stanley Matthews was still playing top-flight football in his fifties.

Sir Stanley Matthews seemed to belong to a different clock from other footballers. Celebrated for his balance, close control and ability to beat defenders, he played professionally across an astonishing span of decades. He was central to Blackpool's famous 1953 FA Cup final comeback against Bolton Wanderers, a match remembered as the Matthews Final even though Stan Mortensen scored a hat-trick. Matthews later continued playing for Stoke City and made his final Football League appearance at the age of fifty. In an era of heavy pitches and far less sophisticated fitness support, that longevity was exceptional. His reputation rested not on noisy controversy but on skill, professionalism and the simple thrill of seeing a winger glide past an opponent.
