The Birth of the Football League
1888
The Football League began in 1888 with twelve founder clubs.
When the Football League began in 1888, English football was entering a new era. Clubs needed a dependable programme of fixtures rather than relying entirely on cup ties and loosely arranged matches. Aston Villa director William McGregor was a driving force behind the plan, and twelve clubs joined the inaugural competition. Preston North End emerged as the first champions, completing the league season without defeat. The format provided regular opponents, standings and an increasingly familiar rhythm to the football calendar. It also helped transform the sport into an organised national spectacle. Today's complicated league structures trace an important part of their ancestry to that practical Victorian idea: arrange reliable fixtures, keep a table and let performances across a season determine the champions.
