The First FA Cup Final at the Oval

1872

📅 16/03/1872

Wanderers defeated Royal Engineers in the inaugural FA Cup final in 1872.

The first FA Cup final took place at the Kennington Oval in London on 16 March 1872, long before packed modern stadiums and television audiences became part of the occasion. Wanderers faced Royal Engineers in a contest organised under rules that were still developing. Morton Betts scored the only goal as Wanderers won 1–0, becoming the competition's first champions. The Oval was better known as a cricket ground, but it provided the stage for a new football tradition. There were no floodlights, electronic scoreboards or vast commercial operations. Yet the basic appeal was already present: two teams, a trophy and the chance to be remembered. From that modest beginning grew one of the world's most famous domestic cup competitions.
