1966
📅 19/07/1966
North Korea defeated Italy 1–0 at Ayresome Park in the 1966 World Cup.
On 19 July 1966, North Korea produced one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history by defeating Italy 1–0 at Ayresome Park, the former home of Middlesbrough FC.
Italy, twice winners of the World Cup, were overwhelming favourites against a North Korean side making their tournament debut.
But in the 42nd minute, Pak Doo-ik scored the only goal of the match, securing a remarkable victory that eliminated Italy and sent North Korea into the quarter-finals.
The North Korean team had captured the imagination of the people of Middlesbrough, who enthusiastically supported the underdogs throughout their stay on Teesside.
North Korea's extraordinary adventure continued in the quarter-final against Portugal, where they raced into a 3–0 lead before Eusébio inspired a dramatic comeback. Portugal eventually won 5–3.
The victory over Italy remains one of the most celebrated giant-killings in World Cup history.
