1966
📅 30/07/1966
Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick as England defeated West Germany 4–2 in the 1966 World Cup Final.
On 30 July 1966, England won the FIFA World Cup for the first time, defeating West Germany 4–2 after extra time at Wembley Stadium.
Geoff Hurst became the first player to score a hat-trick in a men's World Cup Final, producing one of the most famous performances in English football history.
With the score at 2–2 after 90 minutes, Hurst struck a shot in extra time that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down near the goal line. After consulting his linesman, the referee awarded the goal — a decision that remains one of football's most debated moments.
Hurst completed his hat-trick in the closing seconds as supporters began celebrating England's victory. BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme delivered his immortal line: "They think it's all over... it is now!"
England's triumph remains one of the defining moments in the nation's sporting history.
